River Reports
BOGEY Still a few hatchery fish around and some large early natives.
HOH High and muddy after monsoon rain's. If predicted weather stays true, fishing should be extremely good. Some hatchery fish and a bunch of wild pist off steelhead. Dont want to miss this one.
SOLDUC Snyder fish are giving a great opportunity for retention for you the client. This program is vital to the fisheries here on the Peninsula, please let the powers to be know now how important this program is. These are very large fish and there are alot of them. Quite a few early nates also, glad to see a closure till Feb. 16th.
CALAWAH Reports have been very good, mostly native show.
The Fishing
With fishing opportunities almost year round there isn’t a bad time to
book a trip. Here is a breakdown of species & time of year.
Mid September
Starting in the middle of September Coho and Kings will be starting to show up in the Hoh and Quilluete system. During this time the Summer Steelhead fishing is surprisingly good.
October/November - Hoh and Quiluete System
The first big rains in October will push thousands of Kings and Coho into the Quiluete System and Hoh River. The action is very hot and heavy until the middle of November.
November/December - Bogachiel and Sol Duc Rivers
The Hatchery Steelhead start to trickle in on the Bogachiel in the middle of November and by the second week of December are in full force with the action staying good through the first week of January with Salmon. Salmon still open in the Quiluete System until November 30, there are lots of chances to catch a King Salmon, Coho Salmon, and a few Hatchery Steelhead all in the same day during the latter part of November.
January/Febuary
I will fish the Solduc and Hoh Rivers in January, which will start to see good numbers of hatchery Steelhead and some early Native Fish. Febuary is my favorite month to go after those big chrome natives, with numerous fish over 20 pounds caught in Febuary.
March/April
Traditionally March has been the month to hook into that trophy Steelhead. I will fish the Bogachiel, Hoh, and Solduc Rivers during these two months. The numbers and size of fish in March and April can be phenominal to say the least, with many high teen and over 20 pound Steelhead being caught. Also, Springers start to show in the Solduc during the month of April.
May/June
The Hoh opens on May 15th for Salmon and if the river is in shape, this first day is usually very good, with the following weeks producing good numbers of Kings and handfuls of Steelhead. The Solduc usually peaks for Spingers at the end of May and is pretty consistant through June.
July/August
July and August are the times to bring the wife and fair weather folks on a fishing trip. Wear shorts and lots of sunscreen! The Hoh has a run of summer Kings that are very large. Some of these fish are pushing 50 or 60 pounds. August in the Hoh means summer run Steelhead. Many days you can hook into a dozen or more of these hard fighting, chrome beauties. I also fish the Bogachiel for walk-in trips during these two months for summer run Steelhead.
